Maternity Marathons

are designed to be non-competitive.

Maternity Marathons are designed to be non-competitive. Like parenthood, it’s not about winning – it’s about doing the best you can in the situation you’re in. All participants select where they are in the parenthood process, from newly pregnant to 2 years post-partum, and you’re only ‘competing’ against that cohort. You can walk, jog, or run – just make sure to speak with your doctor first.

Our focus

is your health and safety. Participating in a Maternity Marathon should be fun and enjoyable.

Maternity Marathons gives you the opportunity to run non-competitive races while pregnant and post-partum. Not only are you taking care of yourself and your baby, but you’re helping others, too. Maternity Marathons actively advocates for safe and quality maternity care through its support of Every Mother Counts. They raise awareness about the global maternal healthcare crisis and work towards improving access to essential healthcare services for mothers, especially in underserved communities.

Anna-Lee Markstedt, a professional obstacle course racer based in Belgium, remained active until she gave birth. She cartwheeled into the delivery room.

But between 80 and 85 percent of pregnant women are not active enough to meet the guidelines for prenatal exercise, according to Margie Davenport, a University of Alberta professor specializing in pregnancy and postpartum health.

Now, you don’t have to cartwheel to your delivery. But you should be active during pregnancy. One reason for this low exercise rate is because of the confusion on whether exercise is safe for the mother and baby, Davenport said. In fact, the benefits of exercise during pregnancy greatly outweigh the risks.

We created Maternity Marathons because we believe that pregnancy and childbirth doesn’t stop you from living. So whether you run, jog or walk, we want every pregnant and post-partum person to join us. You’ll feel better for moving, for being with other people, and your baby will benefit too!

While pregnant, Meeka had been told not to race competitively. Tina asked her, aren’t there Maternity Marathons? They locked eyes, and an idea took hold.

Maternity Marathons: Races for pregnant and post-partum runners, without competition, so runners can continue to enjoy running and racing, without putting undue stress on their changing bodies.

We want Maternity Marathons to be a place where community is built, where your family can come to cheer you on and have some fun themselves while you run.
